About Ssese Islands

The Ssese archipelago is 84 islands scattered across the Ugandan side of Lake Victoria, most still under forest, ringed by white sand and largely bypassed by the road-trip circuit that runs to the national parks. It's the closest thing Uganda has to a beach holiday — slower, low-key, built around the lake rather than wildlife.

Bugala, the largest island, has most of the lodges and a small fishing-town feel in Kalangala; smaller islands nearby are reachable by boat for a day of near-total quiet.

The forest cover supports vervet and red-tailed monkeys and a healthy bird list, but the draw here is really the pace — kayaking calm bays, fishing with local crews, or simply not doing very much at all.
