About Rwenzori Mountains
The Rwenzori span the Uganda–DR Congo border for 120 km, rising to Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley at 5,109 m — Africa's third-highest summit, and the only one of the continent's high peaks that's a genuine mountaineering climb rather than a long walk. Below the glaciers and jagged rock, the lower slopes hold some of the most biodiverse Afromontane forest anywhere, thick with heather forests, giant lobelias and otherworldly groundsel.
The full trek to Margherita Peak takes seven to nine days and does involve glacier travel and via-ferrata sections near the summit — a serious undertaking, guided throughout by the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services or Rwenzori Trekking Services teams and their porters.
Shorter routes of two to four days reach the lower huts and viewpoints without the technical climbing, giving most of the scenery — bizarre giant plants, waterfalls, bog and forest — without the glacier.
