About Kibale National Park
Kibale is dense, mid-altitude tropical forest with the highest concentration of primates on the continent — around 1,500 chimpanzees among thirteen primate species in total, including red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey. Several chimp communities are fully habituated, so sightings are close and reliable rather than a matter of luck.
Chimp tracking here runs on the same permit system as gorilla trekking but on generally easier terrain and shorter walks, with sightings that often stretch to an hour or more of watching a group feed, groom and move through the canopy.
The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary on the park's edge, run by the local community, adds excellent birding and eight further primate species without needing a permit at all.
